James Caesar Petrillo, voluble chief of the American Federation of Musicians, makes some points during a torrential monologue that started, tamely enough, as an interview. Neither his expressions nor words are particularly ambiguous. Music, he said (left) was something of a crazy business. But even though you have to "maneuver and battle" with employers (right) in negotiating contracts, "we get along all right," Petrillo declared. At 65 and in his 17th consecutive term as AFM president, the labor leader is facing a serious challenge from a Los Angeles local which recently elected an anti- Petrillo slate. Dead. Petrillo in action: "If a guy's looking for a fight, he'll get it."
