Description
Making models of wagons he helped his father build many years ago in Luxembourg, Wis., is the retirement hobby of Harry J. Simonar, 67, of 5703 N. Witte la., Glendale. He was a tool and die maker in the process model laboratory of Globe-Union Inc. and his father was a blacksmith. Simonar, who does most of his work with a penknife, uses Wisconsin black walnut, brass fittings and infinite patience. Spokes for a wheel such as he is holding are made separately and fitted into place. As the view into his work shop shows, there are plenty of tools available it he wants more than the trusty knife. Besides the buggy with the fringe, he has carved a regular wagon, sleigh, a chariot and the sort of wagon used by Italians for gathering grapes.

Photo is dated 1966.

Photo measures 10.25 x 8 inches.
