Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Grace Niermann has cared for thousands. Each Mother's Day, Grace Niermann gets a bouquet of roses from a sailor in the US Navy along with a note that reads: "To the only mother I knew." It's his way of thanking Niermann, who never married but says she has "a thousand children." Niermann, 62, retired as a county employee November 4 after 43 1/2 years, most of them at the Home for Dependent Children. "Those were happy, happy years," she said. She never knows when one of the orphans or rejected children she watched over and loved will stop her on the street and tell her they remember her.

Photo measures 6 x 10.25 inches. Photo is dated 11-17-1988.
