The kind of industrial development planned by Ron Nickel was the key issue at a public hearing held Monday night by the Common Council on a request for rezoning. Several of the about 35 residents at the hearing said they feared that undesirable industries -- such as rendering plants and chemical companies -- would be constructed on the 28-acre site north of the Sanitary Disposal Service landfill along I-94 and Highway 83. Nickel owns the sanitary disposal company and the land to the north of the landfill. His uncle, Walter Nickel, owns the landfill. Ron Nickel has said he would like to develop an industrial park on the land that he owns.
