1988 Press Photo Lee Schneider at New Hope's Rainbow Gardens - mjb69092

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Lee Schneider used an electric artificial pollinating device on tomato plants. In a year when many vegetable growers, both commercial and your basic garden variety, are struggling with hot and dry weather, the staff and clients who run New Hope's Rainbow Gardens here are expanding production. That's because the sheltered workshop for disabled residents of Calumet County employs hydroponic gardening. That is, it uses water instead of soil to supply nutrients to vegetables. New Hope also has a recycling center and a subcontracting enterprise for local businesses. But always, the goal is to provide vocational and other training to people who might not have the skills or opportunity to work elsewhere in the community.

Photo measures 7 x 10.25 inches. Photo is dated 07-31-1988.
