Rites set for Hawkes, retired professor, Madison, Services will be Monday for Lester L. Hawkes, a retired University of Wisconsin - Madison journalism professor who specialized in the study of community newspapers. Hawkes, 82, of Madison, died Friday. He helped launch the careers of hundreds of journalists and served as assistant director of the School of Journalism until his retirement in 1973 after 29 years of teaching. He began his journalism career in the back shop and offices of his father's newspaper, the Sheldon (Illinois) Journal. He became editor of the paper at age 18. The Wisconsin Press Association has awarded a scholarship in his name for 24 years.
