Locked in a safe and never brought out is the medal of honor he won for heroism when the USS Franklin was hit by Japanese bombs and set afire March 19, 1945. Chaplin O'Callahan helped save the carrier from sinking. After the war he returned to teaching at Holy Cross, which he had left in 1940.
