Description
Going for the Gold: Left: Veteran deep sea diver Scott Mitchen of Washburn examines a 13th-century statue of an armored horse, which he found recently while diving in the Caribbean. Mitchen, a Milwaukee native who is President of the Underwater Salvage Company Explorations International, soon will be diving at the site of another shipwreck off the coast of Venezuela. The wreck he's going after, that of the San Pedro d'Alacantara, which sank in 1815, is rumored to contain the lost crown of the Virgin Mary and millions in silver and gold. The crown, if located, will be returned to the people of Venezuela. Below: Among the booty from his previous dive in the Caribbean is a 15-century Ming pot, an 18-century brass box, Spanish pieces-of-eight, a 19th-century snuff box and measuring instruments of unknown origin

Photo measures 8 x 10.25 inches. Photo is dated 02-01-1993.
