The huge gear around the end of the furnace is used to rotate the hopper for pouring. An operator at a control panel activates the furnace but workmen must move in occasionally to remove slag from the furnace ladle. To maintain quality control, a chemist constantly checks the incoming raw material, molten metal, and the ingots.
