Prototype of today's express car made its appearance in early 1840's but actually was a primitive type of container. Today, containerization takes many forms such as R E A's Unit-Pak system of 101-cubic-foot capacity steel wire cages. Unit-Lode containers, foldable and disposable, are supplied to R E A to shippers in sizes up to 60-cubic-feet.
