1980 Press Photo John E. Gladney Jr. at Circuit Court Charged with Murder

Testimony began in a preliminary hearing Thursday before Circuit Judge Leander L. Foley in connection with the death of 81-year-old Nicketas Beltsos, owner of the London Hat Shop, 778 N. Milwaukee St. Beltsos died of a heat attack after he was abducted May 20 near his ship. The three defendants in the case are Barbara Gordon, 22; John E. Gladney Jr., 27, who are charged with second degree murder, kidnapping and robbery; and Daniel Roby, 22, who was charged with party to a burglary. The first witness, Donald Hildebrandt, testified that he saw a black male drag Beltsos into a car.
