1991 Press Photo Fire at Jones Island, Milwaukee, Sewage Disposal Plant

Firefighters battle a grease fire Friday at the Jones Island sewage treatment plant. The blaze disrupted demolition of an abandoned sewage clarifier, an open pit used to separate solid and liquid waste. The grease had accumulated on gears of the aging machinery used to stir waste in the unit, said Norbert Hynek, safety director for the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District. No one was injured.
