Susan Janowski, a Red Cross volunteer for 10 years, resigned shortly after the fire. She has seen death before. she was there when a Midwest Express jet crashed three years ago, killing 31. But the anguish and desperation in Annie Phillips' eyes, her screams as the firefighters carried the small bodies from the burned shell of the house haunt Janowski to this day. "She kept shouting, 'My babies! My babies!'" Janowski recalled. Janowski quit the Red Cross two months after the fire, largely, she said because of the memories of that fire. "Emotionally, I couldn't handle it," she said. Janowski and the other Red Cross volunteers had no idea of the magnitude of the tragedy they were about to become a part of as they headed to the tiny house on North 23rd Street that morning.
