1983 Press Photo Padus, a Deserted Logging Village in Nicolet National Forest

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Once a thriving logging village, Padus now is an overgrown, deserted area along the old tracks that serviced the community bounded by the Nicolet National Forest. The town was built to support the logging for three mills along the railroad between Wabeno and Laona in the 1880s. The mills turned Forest County forests into lumber, laths and cedar shingles and barrelheads. Besides lumber, the forest also provides land for recreation. Tom Kichefski of Rhinelander started a cook fire (left) while camping at Kentuck Lake in the forest.

Photo measures 10 x 6.5 inches. Photo is dated 05-19-1983.
