An underground fire and explosion beneath the eastbound lane of West Kilbourn avenue between North 5th and North 6th streets blew off two manhole covers and dropped one onto an illegally parked car about 8 p.m, Saturday. Police and firefighters closed the surrounding streets to traffic as utility crews tried to identify the cause of the blast and smoldering fire. Police reported that the explosion caused no injuries.
