1956 Press Photo Elk Feeding on Hay in Yakima Washington - mja99438

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Just like deer in Wisconsin, elk are winter problems in some parts of the west. Here is part of a herd of 3.200 of them at a feeding station near Yakima, Washington. They are fed hay to keep them from damaging near-by apple orchards. Hundreds of elk hobnob around lazily in one of their new feeding grounds at nearby Oak Creek where they were herded by helicopter. The Washington state game department feeds the animals hay in the protected areas to keep them away from Yakima Valley orchards -- and no hunting is allowed. Animals - Elk.

Photo is dated 1956.

Photo measures 10 x 8.25 inches.
