Former poster child. Deaf. This story is about someone who was helped years ago by the Milwaukee Hearing Society, which receives funds from the United Way of Greater Milwaukee. The United Way is conducting its annual fund campaign to raise $20,035,000. Some little children think the sun shines everywhere. Little Jeannie Reinbold was like that. She was only 3 years old when her mother, Betty, took her to a United Way program in 1972. And before her mother knew it, the smiling child had wandered off and climbed up onto the lap of a president of a big Milwaukee corporation. "Jeannie was always a real friendly kid," her mother said Tuesday. She also had always had a terrible handicap. She is profoundly deaf. She received help early. First form the Milwaukee Hearing Society, then from a Milwaukee public school and later form other schools and other people. Now, she's 16 and a junior at Plus XI High School. Most f her schooling has been with students who have normal hearing. She has friends. She has fun. She goes to parties and plays soccer and tennis, and she is a very earnest student.
