Description
Ears. David Clausen, 5, will undergo ear surgery that may make him even happier. But it is his ears that are of greatest concern to the adults in the room. Cheryl Sella has decided that David should undergo surgery to correct his ears because she hopes it will help his self-image. He was born with lop ears, a condition characterized by protruding ears. It has not affected David's health or hearing, and it is not life-threatening, says his surgeon, Gary S. Flom, an ear, nose and throat specialist. but whether people like it or not, Sella and Flom say, physical appearance does on some level affect people's self-esteem and how others respond to them. It may, in some ways, shape their future social outlook.

Photo measures 10 x 7.25 inches. Photo is dated 07-16-1990.
