1977 Press Photo David in his germ-proof bubble in Texas Children's Hospital

David, the boy-in-the-bubble, shown here at age 5, was born with SCIDS and lived in a germ-proof bubble. He died in 1984 at the age of 12. DEAD. Houston: David, 5, who has been in a plastic isolation bubble from the day he was born, moves from one portion of the bubble to a play area. The bubble protects him from the world of germs. According to Texas Children's Hospital officials, David has severe combined immune deficiency and would die if not protected from germs.
