Costa Rica, Series, pease. Black pepper plants (above) cling to posts that punctuate a hillside in Costa Rica. Agronomist James Robert (Bob) Hunter substitutes a variety of domestic crops for jungle like that in the background. His 80,000 pepper plants were propagated from an original stock of 120 that he imported from southeast Asia. A Journal writer-photographer team accompanied Milwaukee Museum scientists who did field research on Hunter's 3,300 acre farm.

Photo measures 10 x 8.25 inches. Photo is dated 02-23-1977.
