1957 Press Photo Whooping Cranes Crip & Jo at Audubon Park Zoo, New Orleans

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Jo, captive hope for a new era of whooping cranes, squats on her eggs at the Audubon Park Zoo in New Orleans while her mate, Crip, stands by to take his turn at keeping the eggs warm. Only 27 whooping cranes are known to exist in America today, a thin margin of safety for propagation of the rare species. The two brow, blotched eggs at Audubon Park Zoo represent Jo's sixth attempt to raise a family. Her other tries failed, although last year one chick lived 45 days before succumbing to fungus disease.

Photo is dated 1957.

Photo measures 7 x 9 inches.
