1980 Press Photo 28 Story Main Library of the University of Massachusetts

The 28-story main library of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst is billed as "the tallest in the world." But because the building has been declared unsafe, it is effectively closed to most students most of the time. Leaky roofs, cracked walls and mysterious malfunctions plague the campus, as the state university that went up in the '60s threatens to come down in the '80s. And as at other similarly threatened campuses across the country, there isn't the money to do much about it.
