1967 Press Photo Aerial View of San Quentin Prison exercise yard, California

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Aerial view of the San Quentin Prison shows exercise yard where two thousand inmates massed into two racially menacing mobs 1/18, with Negroes on one side and white prisoners at the other. Squads of guards moved into the yard quickly and using gunfire and tear gas kept the groups separated. The Negroe inmates were first removed in small groups and returned to their cells. The process of doing the same with the white prisoners is under way. All will be fed in their cells tonight to prevent the groups from confronting each other. (California Prisons)
