Description
Sitting in the center of a circular table, Sister Tarcisia supervises the work of her kindergarten class for 6 and 7 years old at St Coletta school for the mentally retarded in Hanover, Mass. At schools like this one and St Coletta's in Jefferson, Wis specially trained teachers lead children toward the mastery of skills which will help them take a useful place in the world. These children, whose IQ's are between 40 and 55, are playing with toys which teach zipping, buttoning and the placing objects of various shapes in relation to each other. Wednesday night, the Joseph P Kennedy Jr Foundation leading organization in work with the mentally retarded, will present the 163 Kennedy awards to six scientific and government leaders who have contributed to this effort. President Lyndon Johnson is scheduled to make the presentation at a dinner in New York city.
