Seeing Notre Dame d'Afrique. Sailors from the USS Marblehead, our newest light cruiser, see the beautiful Cathedral of Notre Dame d'Afrique (Our Lady ofAfrica), one of the most famous shrines of Africa, during the vessel's shake-down cruise. The edifice stands on the heights overlooking Algiers, the capitol of Algeria, on the northern shores of Africa, and is visited by thousands by thousands of Mediterranean tourists.
