A Brush with disaster, General George Washington on his rearing charger directs the August 1776 retreat from Long Island, in this depiction of the scene from the National Archives collection. The action ended with victory for the British, much slaughter and an estimated American loss of 1,076 prisoners. Washington, yet to evolve into the hero of history, had shown that faulty general ship was not a British monopoly
