Over & Under Express-Ways Ready For Tokyo's Olympic Traffic.
After three years of construction, the network of high and low level express-ways leading to the various Olympic stadiums are open to traffic in Tokyo. The old narrow roads, many suitable only for rickshaws have been swept away to clear the path for the super highways which start from the international airport through the world's largest and straggling city. In their plan to cut through the heart of Tokyo, the engineers have sometimes sunk steel supports into the bed of the old canals which also served as outer defence moats for the Imperial Palace in the Edo era when the city was often in a stage of siege with warring feudal lords of rival clans.
