Undersea simulator to be built: A drawing of the undersea simulation system to be built by the Nippon Kokan's Heavy Industries Division at their Tsurumi shipyard for the Japan Association of Underwater Exploitation in cooperation with Japan's Science and Technology Agency, capable of simulating undersea environment of a depth of 500 meters (1,640 ft). Progress in the development of ocean resources the necessity of working at deep sea depths is rapidly increasing, and research diving techniques, and diving biomedical factors which will allow men to work at a depth of 500 meters for a month can be tested by the simulator to train future aquanauts. The simulator accomodates 8 persons, in the 6.2 meter chamber, 3.6 m in diameter with 900 mm entrance/exits. The overall measurement of the simulator is 7.5 meters, and built with Grade 60 steel, with walls 44mm thick. 125 metric tons of steel will be used in its construction.
