Deepfreeze personal spend dark cold winter in Antarctica ; The long winter night - lasting from April until August - is little comfort to the United state's Navy's Deefreeze Operation personal who live at McMurdo sound Naval air Facility on the Continent of Antarctica. As part of the Navy's supporting role for the U.S. Antarctic research Programme - 132 Navy men and three civilians spent the Antarctic winter at McMurdo this year - who with others are preparing for the Summer assiult on Antar~~~ - Operation Deepfreeze Sixty. Photo shows William H. Halliford, Ce1, Usn Of Pixley, Cal. and James Goldsworthy, Ec1, of Jersey City, N.J. relax in the lounge of the first class petty officers Barracks. The fireplace, an artificial one constructed at McMurdo se~nd, is made of scrap plywood, painted d~ll red. Sand was thrown on during painting to give the fireplace brick texture. The 'Logs' are oversized bamboo with a red light behind to ~~ give a flame effect.
