1967 Press Photo average Briton's image of a judge

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
When looks can be deceptive: The average Briton's image of a judge is of a rather elderly and forbidding gentleman in roves and a wig who sits in court and asks square old questions such as; What is a Beatle. This is not the image is Essen, West Germany. For the attractive 30 year old girl picture here, is Richter (judge) Margret Moller who sits in the Civil Court and Divorce Court in Essen. She also deals with minor offenders at what we would call summary hearings. But don't let her looks fool you into thinking she is unusually lenient. Yesterday, Fraulein Moller, who is in London on a 10 month course studying British law, said: Only recently I sent a man to prison for several months for driving and drinking. In Germany, law students can become judges at the age of 20 without first having to be barristers as in Britain. Photo shows Judge Margret Moller yesterday.

Photo measures 9.25 x 16.25 inches.

Photo is dated 2-2-1967.
