Canon Mary Simpson First Women Priest To Preach At The Abbey: Canon Mary Michael Simpson 52, of the American episcopal church, assisting at holy communion yesterday at St. Margaret's Westminster, with the Bishop of Hirmingham, The Rt Rev Hugh Montefiore, presiding. Yesterday she became the first women priest to occupy the pulpit in Westminster Abbey.Her arrival in Britain last week brought into the open a clash of opinion among leading Bishops. Bishop Montefiore is supported by the Bishops of Winchester,Worcester and Liverpool in advancing the case for women's ordination.Photo shows.
