Hundreds Perish in the Ceylon Floods. Sugar Workers Evacuated over at Temporary Bridge. It is feared that the death role may reach 1,000 - in the recent floods which devastated vast areas in Ceylon. Supplies to relieve the suffering of the people have been sent by Britain - America - Israel Malaya and Singapore. The floodwaters engulfed nearly half of the island - and for some time the only communication between some parts of the islands was by radio More than a million people are affected, and more than 400,000 were rendered homesless. Photo shows The scene as 400 workers who were marooned for several days at a sugar farm at Gal Oya - in the Eastern part of Ceylon - were evacuated to a safer section over a temporary bridge.
