Permanent home for the Prinknash Monks: Within a year, the Bendictine monks of Prinknash near Gloucester,expect to move into their now home.The foundation stone was laid 32 years ago, and the monks themselves worked on the foundations.Money for the new building was raised by the sale of paintings.The new building will have cells for 60 monks and 10 guest rooms. Modern kitchen and laundry equipment, lifts, showers and central heating are included in the plans; the new Abbey will also have 8 stained-glass windows, an impressive Library and well-lit refactory. Each day the monks attend their first service at 5 a.m. and their last at 8 p.m., before bed at 8.30.The day includes study and manual work, and the community largely supports itself by itepottery, farm and garden produce and the making of vestments. In the new abbey, the chapel atolls and grilles, and the organ itself, have been made by the monks Benedictines have been associated with Gloucester since the eleventh century - and for the monks of the twentieth their new home will be the realisation of a dream. The new monastery is taking shape in the Cotswold valley.
