Description
Ostriches From Zimbabwe: The arrival of three baby ostriches at Chessington zoo, Surrey, has posed somewhat of a problem for the bird keepers at the zoo. The young birds have been bought to be raised in the new "Celebrity Bird Garden" where breeding the birds is to be a priority. The only trouble is they don't know what sex they are. and dispite careful examination by several vets and bird experts, these ostriches are keeping their gander a well guarded secret. They will have to wait another six months until they shed their soft, grey-brown plumage to adopt the instantly recognizable plumage of adult ostriches. Hoping they have both sexes among the three who have come all the way from Zimbabwe. Photo shows David stamps, the head bird keeper at the zoo, mothering one of the ostriches, with the other one kicking up a fuss,

Photo measures 8 x 10 inches.

Photo is dated 03-03-1981.
