1971 Press Photo Jan Vavra assembels wood vase of small pieces

A Retired Czech joiner with an unusual hobby: Jan Vavra, a retired joiner from Novy Jicin, north Moravia, who worked in the pattern shop of the Tatra Automobile Workds at Koprivince for many years, has another interesting hobby. His love of wood and his desire to create something individual , was the origin of his present skill and craftsmanship. From different species of wood he makes things such as vases, dishes, candlesticks, bracelets, writing sets and so on. He uses the natural colours of the wood in his work and by patient glueing and shaping produces the most beautiful ornaments. photo shows With the "diligence of an ant" Jan Vara is putting this wonderful vase together piece by pieve. Such work takes as much as 1,200 hours to make.
