1956 Press Photo British Firm Invents New TV Telescope

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
TV Telescope: A difficulty in astronomical photography is penetrating our own atmosphere. The British firm of Pye Ltd. has tackled this by mounting a television camera on a refractor telescope. The super-sensitive image tube cuts down exposure time, minimizing the effects of atmospheric tremor. Pye has been invited by Lowell Observatory, Arizona to send a team to Bloomfontein, Union of South Africa, this summer to photograph Mars. Photo shows a modified Pye underwater image orthicon TV camera mounted on the 12 in. refractor at a recent international astronomical congress.

Photo measures 8 x 10 inches.

Photo is dated 3-1-1956.
