But in Wajir, in Manya"s desolate and lonely North-Eastern province (once known as the northern Frontier district) lions are still a very real danger t life, limb and property. At a baraza (public Meeting) held near Wajir recently,a district officer told the people of the district that 30 people, 200 cattle, 120 camels and 235 sheep have been caten by lions in Wajir this year: that is, in less than six months. only a few hours before the baraza was held, a 24-year-old man who was looking after a hard of cows was sat upon by a lion, killed and eaten, said the district officer. he said that one way to avoid being eaten by lions was to avoid walking about at night. in Nairobi, the chief Gama warden of Kenya claimed that these figures had been Exaggerated. but he said, if people complained about man-eating lions, his Gama wardens would go in to action.
