Marie Harel Who 'Invented' Camembert Has New Statue In Native Town: Marie Harel, A French peasant woman who made, as the story goes, the first camembert in the XVIII century, had a statue had a statue in her native town vimoutiers (Normandy) before the war. This statue was destroyed during the air raids, a new one was unveiled the other day on the same spot to the Glory of the "inventor' of the famous French cheese. Photo shows The new statue of Marie Harel erected at vimoutiers, Normandy.
