The Third Day of 'The Trial of The Century'.
The story of an unknown gunman, and of how he was alleged to have killed three woman at Burnside, Lanarkshire, was heard in court in Glasgow yesterday. And it was alleged in court that the man who first told the story was Peter Manuel, who sat in the dock. It was the third day of the trial in which Peter Manuel, a 31-year old woodworker, of Fourth-street, Birkenhead, Uddington, Lanarkshire, is accused of eight murders. Manuel pleads not guilty to the murder charges. The last witness of the day was Mr. Lawrence Dowdall, a Glasgow solicitor. He recalled how a man called William Watt came to be arrested and that he was instructed to take over his defence. Later he received a letter from Peter Manuel, suggesting a meeting - and at that meeting, said Mr. Dowdall, Manuel said that Mr. Watt was innocent. When asked "How do you know", Manuel replied: "Because I know the man who did it". William Watt is the man who Manuel, in a special defence, has alleged had killed his wife, Mr. Marion Watt, his 16-year old daughter, Vivienne, and his sister-in-law, Mr. Margaret brown. these murders are among the eight of which Manuel is accused. Before yesterday's hearing, prosecution, fell and hurt his leg and was taken to hospital.
