Out-of-Work Clergyman Draw Social Security Benefit Anglican clergyman are facing a growing threat of redundancies. Already some have found themselves out of work and forced to "sign out" at the employment exchanges. A few have been reduced to drawing Social Security benefit. They are classified as "self-employed" and are therefore not entitled to unemployment benefit or redundancy money. Roman Catholic priests are not affected as they are certain to be guaranteed work of some kind by their church. The Rev. John Toon, 42, who gave up his Leicestershire Parish to go to Canada, has been drawing social security for his wife and four children since returning last June. Photo Shows:- The Rev. John Toon is seen off by his wife Joan and his four children as he left his Hertfordshire home for the local employment exchange to collect his social security benefit.
