Description
Cardinals Lie Prostrate on St. Peter's Floor.: The new cardinals prostrate themselves on the carpeted, marble floor of St. Peter's Rome, after the Pope had placed on each of the heads of 17 prelates the Red Hats which they will never wear again. The glittering ceremony, full of pomp and colour, was seen by 30,000 people. The Pope urged the cardinals to be fearless and even shed their blood for the church. Later, at secret consistory, the Pope gave each cardinal an amethyst ring worth £30.
