Church toppled by chilean temblor: chillan, chile. some idea of the tremendous force of chile's disastrous earthquake can be gathered by the thickness of the walls of this church . the entire front portion of the church was tossed into the street of chillan when the temblor struck. Pedestrians and cars were squashed under this huge mass of masonry this was the only street in chillan that still looked like a street after the earthquake. it is estimated that 10,000 persons died in chillan in the earthquake. The ruins are of san carlos church.
