1965 Press Photo Special Patrol Group to Combat Crime in London

Special Patrol Group to Combat Crime: A special 100-strong patrol group begins operations in North West London today. The aim is to beat outbreaks of crime, especially housebreaking; by saturating trouble spots with uniformed policemen. Mr. J.L. Waldron, Assistant Commisioner, "A" Department, is responsible for the overall control of the group which consists of five inspectors, 12 Sergeants, 80 constables and two women constables, under the officer-in-charge, Supt. John Gerrard. Photo shows one of the control vans showing Sgt. John Cook, 32, of Lee, S.E. London and W.P.C. Mary Mckay, 27, of Norwich - seen operating the radio - at Hendon Training School, where one of the units of the new Group were available to the Press.
