Goliath Gantry For Shipbuilding In Japan: Straddling a 124,000 DWT tanker now under construction is a Hitachi giant gantry crane at the Sakade shipyard of Kawasaki Dockyard Co. on Shikoku Island, Japan. The newly built crane, with a height of 69 metres, has a span of 102 meters, and can lift 200 tons. An elevator is provided to take the operator 60 metres up to his cab. The four supporting legs of the crane are made of large diameter steel pipes to reduce the weight of the crane itself. The dock is 380 meters long, and 62 meters wide, with a depth of 10.3 meters, and is capable of building ships up to 300,000 tons.

Photo measures 8 x 10 inches.

Photo is dated 08-08-1967.
