Essex Scientists Study Maize- Growing: Dr Neil Baker and Dr Steve Long of Essex University's biology department have received a ~16,000 grant from the Agricultural Research Council to study the problems of growing maize in ~~~~ Britain. They have designed special equipment which will ~~~~~~~them to look inside the plant while it is growing, simulate sunlight and observe the effects of cold n the plant. Cold in a particular problem Britain, reducing the crop yield to an uneconomic level. Leaf samples killed by a cold shock will be sent to the university of Leeds for analysis. In the later stages of its Three-year length the project will also study varieties of maize grown in high altitude regions of others parts of the world.
