Description
Hundreds of shanty dwellers overturned cars, set fire to a bus and stormed police with gasoline bombs, bolts and stones in an effort to retain apartments they had occupied some months ago. When police drove to San Basilio, a suburban district near Rebibbia Jail, to clear the buildings, they were stopped by barricades and flaming mounds of tires. Steel helmeted riot police and squatters face each other as tear gas bombs are thrown to quell the shanty dwellers demonstrations.
