Dockyard riggers âœsplice the mainbraceâ as the re-rigging of the âœVictoryâ nears completion. The re-rigging of Nelsonâs âœVictoryâ at Portsmouth has been almost completed, and sixteen civilian riggers were invited by the Captain of the Dockyard, Captain J.A. Marrack R.N. to unofficially âœsplice the mainbraceâ today. The work of replacing the old sisal ropes of the Victory with Italian hemp, which will last a considerable of years, was started last October, the major part, involving the main mast, foremast, bowsprit and Jibboom, has now been finished. To replace the rigging of the Victory 34 miles of hemp, 3-tons of spun yarn, 300 yards of old canvas and 224 gallons of tar are needed.
