Description
Policewoman Recruiting The Family. The Soft persuasive voice of pretty Joan Williamson is boosting the establishment of the West Riding constabulary - for Joan is talking her whole family into joining the force. When the second of her 19 year old identical twin brother was sworn in at Wakefield (Sept 13) as a constable Joan was there to welcome him into the fold. Now Joan, her twin brothers, and her husband are all serving in the West Riding police. Her "little" brothers were only 11-year old schoolboys when she became fascinated by police worked and joined up as a woman constable in 1958. Her work interested the twins so much that after they had left school to go to work in the pits with their father, Mr. Jack Taylornear their home in Great Crescent, South Elmsall, near Wakefield, they began to think of a police career. Joan told them all about the police and in May this year twin Marry gave up his job as apprentice pit electrician to become P.C.2192. Then the second twin Eric followed suit. Last year Joan married 28-year old R.A.F man Jack Williamson - and talked her husband into joining up in the West Riding Force too this year. Now, the sole remaining member of the family, Joan's 22-year old brother Lewis is hoping to join. He applied last year only to find that he is one quarter of an inch below the minimum height requirement of five feet eight inches.Said 29-year old Joan, who lives at Pambroke Rise, Scawsby, Doncaster, "It has become a real family affair. I loved the work and the others were encouraged by listening to me." New recruit, Eric, added "Joan really fired us with the desire to become policemen. In only hope Barry and I don't cause too much confusion being twins." And chief Inspector John Williams of the West Riding Constabulary H.Q a Wakefield summed up, "What a wonderful tribute this is to Joan. She is a wonderful recruiting officer and we are tremendously proud of her." Joan serves at Bentley, near Doncaster, her husband Jack is at Doncaster and Barry serves at Maltby, near Rotherham, and Eric is having 13 weeks initial training at the No. 3 District police training center at Pannal Ash, Harrogate.
