1968 Press Photo New gas lights for roads in London

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
The new replacing the old â The gas lights are being replaced in Constitution Bill, London, where from end to end slender modern lampposts have been dug in alongside every Victoria relic. Soon workmen will take the old lights away. Where they will take the old lights away. Where they will go nobody knows. Perhaps they will end up in America âœas a bit of Olde Englandâ. Itâs a pity, but itâs progress. Progress in this case means more light and safer roads. But it also means a little of the romantic past has been lost. Photo Shows: The modern lampposts pictures alongside the old gas lights, in Constitution Bill. H/Keystone
