Building works at Stonehenge: The ministry of Public Building and Works has started a difficult operation at the nearly-4,000 year old Stonehenge ring of stones on Salisbury Plain. The operation is to raise a 25 ton stone in the outer circle which fell over last year. The stone (No. 23) which is partially over the hole in which it stood, has been raised by a crane and carried clear to allow archaeological excavation of the hole to be carried out under the direction of Professor R.J.C. Atkinson of Cardiff University who is an expert on Stonehenge, after which it will be concerted up and the stone re-set in it's original position. Photo shows Professor Atkinson kneels in the hole left by the stone which can be seen in it's cradle in the background. He will be carrying out a detailed examination of the earth formation in the hole later in the week.

Photo measures 8 x 10.25 inches.

Photo is dated 5-6-1964.
